Passages, September 2009

Dates: Labor Day Weekend, September 5 - 7
, 2009
Collector's Reception: Friday, September 4, 6:00-8:00pm
Exhibit Hours: 1:00-5:00pm, Sat & Sun; 1:00-4:00pm Mon

Passages continues the on-going annual collaborative exhibit that Northern California artists Warren Arnold, Jocelyn Audette, and Hanya Popova Parker hold each year and is the seventhshow that this trio has held at the Blue Gum Gallery.

In this year’s exhibit, they take a radically new approach and explore the significant stages of life, or passages, that occur from conception to beyond death, providing their interpretations in stone, drawings, oil, and encaustic.

The exhibit begins with drawings by Jocelyn Audette that take the viewer from Alpha through young adulthood. The second set of drawings by Hanya Popova-Parker continue the theme from courtship through to Omega. Warren Arnold’s sculpture supplements and supports the drawings and paintings throughout the exhibit. Once again, the artists employ the process of interpreting drawing into sculpture into painting, segueing from two-dimensional work to three-dimensional to two-dimensional again, or 2-3-2.

While their diverse experiences and personalities influence their approaches to the media and the theme, it is the collaborative aspects that underlie the exhibit and give it a unique dynamic energy.

Fragments
, September 2008

Dates: Saturday, August 30 through Monday, September 1, 2008
Times: Opening Reception, Friday, August 29, 6:00pm to 8:00pm
Exhibit hours: Saturday, August 30 thru Monday, September 1, 1:00pm to 5:00pm

Fragments is the sixth annual show in which this trio of artists collaborate, this time to create art inspired directly from found objects. The show explores two dimensional to three dimensional and back to two dimensional interpretations of those objects, first as 2D drawings, then as 3D sculpture, and finally again interpreted as 2D paintings, with only the first interpretation actually working from the found object while the others work from the first and second interpretations respectively.

Sculptor Warren Arnold, and painters Jocelyn Audette and Hanya Popova Parker will show their depictions of fragments from the coastal shore, drawing inspiration from the same objects collected on beach walks and expressing their observations, each in a different form and dimension — sculpture, drawings and paintings. While their diverse experiences and personalities influence their approaches to the form, media and the theme, it is the collaborative aspects that underlie the exhibit and give it a unique, dynamic energy.

Dates: Saturday, October 7, 2006
Times: 10:00am - 10:00pm

This one-day exhibit is the second of a three-part series of exhibits that highlight the three Sonoma County visual artists who each received a $5000 SonomaArts Emerging Artist award in early 2006 -- the largest cash prize ever offered for individual emerging artists in the Sonoma County. The 2006 awards are administered by the Arts Council of Sonoma County and sponsored by Community Foundation Sonoma County.

The award is designed to locate and recognize emerging artists in Sonoma County based upon an in-depth and objective process. Artists can be nominated by one of 50+ different arts organizations throughout the county. Nominees will be asked to provide work samples and a proposal. A team of curators will review the proposals and select 25 of the strongest candidates for the final selection by a panel of prestigious Bay Area jurors.

Secret Beach, June 2005

Secret Beach was an exhibition by three Northern California artists who collaborated in creating works about the figure in the natural environment at a place they call "Secret Beach". This was the second year these artists collaborated in an exhibit that combined the eternal inspiration of the figure with each artist's own unique interpretation. In this exhibit, the resulting work was about the contrasts and connectons of the figure with the beach environment. It was about capturing the ephemeral beauty and mystery of the figure in nature.
